Opening the first Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Austin in 1997, owners Tim and Karrie League have created a chain of theaters that today has locations all over Austin as well as San Antonio, Houston and New Braufels. The Alamo Drafthouse experience includes wine, beer including local brews and made to order food that can be ordered both before and during the movie with no interruption to the film viewing experience by writing down the order using the paper and pen provided on the table in front of you and then standing it up in the clip at the front of the table. Besides first run films, the Alamo also shows classics, often with a twist, such as their "Quote-Along" and "Sing-Along" screenings for fan favorites like "Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Elf," "Moulin Rouge," "The Big Lebowski," "Princess Bride," "Office Space," "A Christmas Story" and "Grease" as well as food related or celebrity appearance special events. There are currently four Alamo Drafthouse theaters in Austin with a fifth under construction on South Lamar.

Held each year at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin at 713 Congress Avenue and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the Fantastic Fest is the largest single genre film festival in the United States. The Fantastic fest specializes in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and some of the strangest films from all over the world. Such films as “There Will Be Blood,” “Apocalypto,” and “Zombieland” have had their world premiers at the Fantastic Fest Film Festival in Austin. Celebrities making appearances in years past have included Mel Gibson, Bill Murray, Dolph Lundgren, Jemaine Clement, Paul Rudd, Bill Pullman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau, George Romero, Darren Aronofsky and Mike Judge. Many new The world, national and regional premieres of many new fantasy genre films are presented each year at the Fantastic Fest, the majority at the Alamo Drafthouse, named by Entertainment Weekly one of the best cinemas in American. Food and beverages, including alcohol, are served during the movies at the Alamo Drafhouse without any intrusion into the movie experience. Fantastic Fest was named as one of the “25 coolest film festivals” and the “25 film festivals worth the entry fee” by Moviemaker Magazine. The 2014 dates for the 2014 Fantastic Film Festival are September 18 through September 25, 2014.

Matthew McConaughey

Well known movie actor Matthew McConaughey has appeared in more than thirty motion pictures, is a member of the Texas Film Hall of Fame and and has been a part of the Austin film scene since his days as a student at the University of Texas. Born in Uvalde, Texas in 1969, Matthew McConaughey came to Austin in 1989 to attend the University of Texas and has kept his ties to Austin ever since, including filming a number of productions in the Austin and Central Texas area with local crews. The Paramount Theatre is a classical revival style movie and live theatre built in 1915 located in downtown Austin. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Paramount been home to vaudeville, silent movies and "talkies," music, dance, and Broadway shows for almost 100 years and the performers that have appeared there include Houdini, the Marx Brothers, Helen Hayes, Orson Welles, Sarah Bernhardt, the Ziegfeld Follies, the Metropolitan Opera, Lillian Russell, John Philip Sousa, the Barrymores, Lillian Gish, and George M. Cohan to such modern-day favorites as Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Sarah Vaughan, Lyle Lovett, Gregory Hines, and Mandy Patinkin. The Paramount currently operates along side the State Theatre next door under The Austin Theatre Alliance, anon-profit organization strives to bring the widest variety of entertainment to as many people as possible in its two historic theatres. The Paramount presents comedy, drama, music, dance, spoken word, children’s programming and films including it's classic summer film series and is home to Austin’s red carpet film premieres and is an integral part of SXSW and the Austin Film Festival.

Operating under the Office of the Governor of the State of Texas, the Texas Film Commission has been assisting filmmakers and promoting the film industry in Texas since 1971 and more recently supporting the burgeoning Texas video game industry. The Texas Film Commission provides free information and assistance to projects of all types and all budgets. The Texas Film Commission also seeks to connect productions with personnel and service companies and provides a listing of current and upcoming professional film or commercial projects in Texas seeking crew members, actors and extras as well as animation and video game developer jobs and Texas film festivals and competitions seeking film entries. The Commission also assists media companies in location research, guidance on filming on State-owned property and other information relevant to media production in Texas.
